Regarded as a classic by both United fans and vintage Umbro connoisseurs, the 1996-98 Manchester United home shirt was worn across 2 seasons in which United’s fortunes differed substantially.

In the 1996-97 campaign, Fergie’s men positively romped to the Premier League title and the Champions League semi finals, losing only 5 games in the league and beating Fenerbahçe and FC Porto in Europe. 

The maverick genius of Eric Cantona (who retired at the end of the 1996-97 season) was augmented with a whole array of internationally-capped superstars as United solidified their place as one of the very best club sides in the world. Other starters included academy graduates David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and the Neville brothers, as well as Norwegian duo Ronny Johnson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the consistently brilliant Roy Keane.

The 1997-98 season was a different matter, though, as a Cantona-less United side faltered in all major competitions, losing out on the Premier League title by 1 point despite Andy Cole’s 25 goals in all competitions. Still, the disappointment of losing the title in such a fashion no doubt propelled this exceptional squad to achieve something historic just 1 season later…
