Edgar Davids: Barnet Boss

It’s not every day that a Champions League-winning international superstar rocks up in League Two. But, following his exit from Crystal Palace and seeming retirement from football in late 2010, Edgar Davids signed for North London side Barnet FC as a player-manager in 2012.
Relegation at the end of the 2012-13 season surely came as a shock to the Bees (who after 13 wins and 12 draws in League Two were honestly not “that bad”), but a bigger shock surely was the revelation that Davids was actually going to stay and battle it out with his new club in the fifth tier of English football.
Edgar Davids. That guy who played for Ajax, Inter and Barcelona. Yeah, him. Regular football convention was pretty much out the window at this point. Davids should have retired, probably. But he stayed on, playing 8 more games in the Conference.
Elephant in the room… yes, Davids also selected 1 as his squad number, breaking decades of football numbering tradition to assert his unquestionable place as Player/Manager/Captain/literal Number 1. Madness.
